Product Description

 What is umeshu?

Umeshu, Plum Wine, Japanese liqueur

Umeshu, which is a representative liqueur of Japan, is made from steeping ume fruits (Japanese plum) in alcohol and sugar. The components are extracted through maturation lasting several months to several years. As it can be made easily, even at home, many people are fond of it. This liqueur combines medicinal effects with alcohol content.

What is ume?

Umeshu, Plum Wine, Japanese liqueur
Ume is a tree from the rose family originating in China. It is said that the earliest written mention of ume was of "salted ume" in a Chinese commercial document from around 2000 BCE. Ume was brought to Japan from its origin, the Yangtze region of China, during the Yayoi period. During the Edo period, ume was cultivated by each farmer, in order for "ume" to be used as a preserved food or household medicine. Apparently, ume was processed  and preserved as "umeboshi" (pickled plum) and "umeshu" (plum wine) before being eaten, because the cultivated "ume" could not be eaten as is.
